Celtic boss Brendan Rodgers has praised young Eoghan O’Connell, saying that the defender made very few mistakes during the Celts’ 1-1 draw against FC Astana on Wednesday.

20-year-old O’Connell, who spent part of the previous season on loan at Cork City, where he made seven appearances in the League of Ireland, after spending a loan spell at Oldham Athletic, is a centre-back by trade.

Celtic grabbed a 1-1 draw against FC Astana as a late Leigh Griffiths goal handed the Celts a crucial away goal, after Yuri Logvinenko had handed the Kazakhstan side the lead.

Rodgers, who took over at Celtic in late May, has lauded young O’Connell, saying that the youngster made very few errors during the game in Astana.

The Scot told the official Celtic website: “I thought he was outstanding for a young player being on the fringes of the team for a few years and coming into that environment under that pressure, he made very few mistakes in the game.
