Mark Warburton has poured cold water on talk that Rangers want to snap up former Manchester United striker Robin van Persie and says there is simply no substance to speculation he is heading to Ibrox.

The Gers have been linked with signing the veteran hitman and Warburton has admitted to being on the lookout for a new forward before the transfer window closes.

And Warburton admits he was bombarded with questions about a potential deal for Van Persie, explaining in a press conference: "I woke up to a barrage of text messages and missed calls – apparently the deal is done and everyone knows about it apart from anyone at Rangers Football Club."

Warburton says that Rangers have not even gone as far as lodging an enquiry for Van Persie, though he does rate the Dutchman.

"The fact of the matter is there is no substance behind it whatsoever", the Englishman continued.

"Not even an enquiry, a general enquiry.

"That's no disrespect to a magnificent, talented player.

"So totally bemused by the whole episode."

Rangers have signed only one striker so far this summer, bringing in youngster Joe Dodoo from Premier League champions Leicester City following the expiry of his contract at the King Power Stadium.

Van Persie, 32, moved from Manchester United to Turkish giants Fenerbahce last summer.

He has won over 100 caps for the Netherlands and is the country's leading goalscorer at international level.
