Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger admits that the amount of money the Premier League clubs are spending this summer is scary.

While Arsenal finished second in the league table last season, they were more or less out of the title race towards the last few weeks of the campaign, and only finished second because of Tottenham’s capitulation towards the end.

Arsenal fans have been left frustrated by Wenger’s reluctance to spend big, and the arrival of Granit Xhaka from Borussia Monchengladbach is the only signing of note so far.

The Gunners have not won the league title for more than a decade, and the Frenchman has stressed that he will do everything necessary to improve on last season’s second place finish.

However, he feels that it is going to be tough because of the ambition being shown by other clubs and admits that it is scary to see the amount of money being spent in the Premier League this summer.

When asked whether a top four finish will be enough for Arsenal next season, Wenger said via his club's site: “It’s never enough. I personally believe that no matter what you do, it’s never enough.

“You have to give absolutely everything to take the best out of the team.

"I believe that we know what we have to do, because we were second last year, we had 18 teams behind us.

“It’s a big ask, because when you look at the Premier League, every club is hugely ambitious.

"You look at the cheques that everybody signs and it’s quite scary.

"That’s what the Premier League is about at the moment.”

Wenger is still looking to add a striker to his squad after Leicester forward Jamie Vardy rejected their offer earlier in the summer.
