Rangers new boy Josh Windass is hoping to force his way into the squad for next week’s Scottish Premiership opener against Hamilton.

The 22-year-old midfielder joined Rangers this summer, and scored in their Scottish League Cup win over East Stirlingshire earlier this month, but picked up a hamstring injury in the process.

He missed the game against Stranraer earlier this week and has been ruled out for Rangers’ friendly against Burnley later today at Ibrox due to the hamstring concern.

Windass is expected to return to training on Monday, but he admits that missing two games on the trot is going to lower his chances of playing against Hamilton on the opening day of the season at Ibrox next Saturday.

However, he is keen to cover every blade of grass during training next week to force Mark Warburton into including him in the squad for Hamilton’s visit next weekend.

He told the club’s official website: “I’m hoping I’m involved against Hamilton, but the injury I have had and missing these two games might impact it, but you never know what the gaffer is thinking so it depends.

“It will be the week leading up to the Hamilton game and training should be quite intense so hopefully I can pick up where I left off.

“Everyone wants to be part of the first game and whether I am part of it or not I don’t know yet so I’d like to have a good week of training that week and try and forced myself into the squad.”

Warburton will be hoping to have all his key players fit and ready by the time Hamilton takes the field against Rangers next Saturday at Ibrox.
