Leeds United head coach Garry Monk is pleased to finish his club’s pre-season programme with a win, but admits that the real hard work starts next week.

The Yorkshire giants capped off their impressive pre-season with an encouraging 2-1 win over Serie A outfit Atalanta, with goals from Chris Wood and new signing Kemar Roofe.

Other than a poor second half performance against Peterborough earlier this month, Leeds have been impressive during their pre-season friendlies, and Monk admits that it is always nice to end things with a victory.

He feels a win over a European side from a top league will provide an extra spring in his players' steps next week in training, but admits it all boils down to the game against Queens Park Rangers on Sunday.

The Leeds boss said in a press conference: “It’s always good to end your pre-season with a victory.

“You take that confidence into next week’s training and into the game, but we all know that the real work starts now.”

Monk is happy with the work done by his players during the summer, and admits that Leeds are feeling confident ahead of the start of the new season.

“We have been happy with the pre-season; I think we have been working in a good way, but still need to do more. There is a lot more improvement that we need to make as a team.

“In terms of pre-season, where they are, having worked them for just five weeks, I think they have been working in a good way, and we are looking forward to the season.”
