Leeds United head coach Garry Monk believes Rafael Benitez has the attitude to help Newcastle United bounce straight back into the Premier League next season.

Benitez took charge of the club with just a handful number of games left last season, and couldn’t stop Newcastle from being relegated from the Premier League.

The Magpies convinced the Spaniard to continue at St. James’ Park, and Benitez has spent this summer to build a squad that can dominate the Championship next term.

Newcastle are feeling confident ahead of the start of the new season, and Monk feels in Benitez they have one of the best managers in Europe guiding them.

The Leeds head coach feels former Liverpool and Real Madrid boss is looking at Newcastle as a project, where he has been challenged to restore the club’s Premier League status.

And he also feels that Benitez’s understanding of British football should also stand him in good stead in the Championship.

The Leeds boss said on BBC Radio 5 live: “They have in Rafa one of the most experienced coaches in Europe. He knows that culture of British football.

“I think he sees this as a project, he sees the challenge of getting Newcastle United back in the Premier League, and being a real force in the Premier League.

“That’s probably his attitude and focus in what he is trying to do there.”

Newcastle will open their Championship campaign with a trip to Fulham this Friday night.
