Leeds United head coach Garry Monk feels his club’s struggles to hold on to their best players is not new as most sides outside of the Premier League face the same battle.

The Whites have seen a number of their best players leave the club over the last few years for Premier League outfits, and even for a few established Championship sides.

In January they lost Sam Byram to West Ham, and this summer they have already seen Lewis Cook join Bournemouth, with palpable fear that the exodus has not stopped.

Charlie Taylor’s transfer request has been rejected by Leeds, but many feel the saga could run until the end of the transfer window, with Premier League clubs interested in the defender.

However, Monk feels this is nothing new for clubs outside the Premier League as players are always keen to play at a higher level.

The Leeds manager told BBC Radio 5 live, when asked about the challenge of holding on to his best players: “I think every club outside of the Premier League will always face that.

“The players will always want to play in the highest leagues, and every club outside the Premier League will always face that battle, nothing strange or nothing new to anyone.

“We are very focused on what we are trying to do.

"We know that it is important that we keep our best players and we try build around them.”

Leeds have signed seven new players this summer, but the club are desperate to hold on to their top performers as they look to fight for a playoff spot next season.
