Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho has indicated that Bastian Schweinsteiger doesn’t feature in his plans for the new season.

The former Germany international joined Manchester United last summer from Bayern Munich, but played very little football in the second half of last season due to injuries.

Speculation around his future at the club thickened when it emerged that the former Germany captain has been training with the reserves and trialists.

And Mourinho has made it clear that Schweinsteiger is not part of his plans for the new season as he pointed out the number of players he wants in his squad for the upcoming campaign.

When asked about the veteran midfielder’s future at the club, the Portuguese said in a press conference this afternoon: "What is happening? It happens at every club on the world. The manager decides his squad.

"I choose a certain number of players to face the season that is it. I like to work with 20 and three 'keepers – I have done it for 15 years.

"We have so many players, but so many competitions and the Europa League changes a lot. We could play 15 matches in it, on Thursdays, and there is normally Premier League on Sundays.

“I have made a decision to have 23 plus three. It is still a lot. I had to make my decisions."

Schweinsteiger still has two years left on his contract with the club, but it is clear Mourinho wants Manchester United to offload him this month.

Manchester United have reportedly failed to convinced Italian clubs to take the midfielder despite agreeing to pay 60 per cent of his wages.
