Roma goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny has endorsed Roma’s proposed move for Barcelona defender Thomas Vermaelen, who has also been linked with West Ham, and admits that he would love to reunite with his former Arsenal team-mate at the Stadio Olimpico.

The 26-year-old custodian completed his loan switch from Arsenal to Roma yesterday, and the Giallorossi also reserved the right to make the move permanent at a later date.

However, Szczesny is not expected to be Roma’s last bit of transfer business, as the club are also looking to sign a defender, and are firmly in the chase for Barcelona’s Vermaelen.

The Pole did play with the Belgian international at Arsenal for a number of seasons, and Szczesny admits Vermaelen’s arrival at the Stadio Olimpico would be delightful as he remains a wonderful defender.

“Yes, Vermaelen is a good player”, the 26-year-old told Roma’s official website.

“I haven’t spoken to him much since he left Arsenal, but he’s a very good player.

“If there was a possibility of him playing for Roma, I’d be delighted because he’s a very good friend of mine and a terrific player.”

Roma are not the only ones chasing Vermaelen as it has been suggested that West Ham are also interested in seeing him return to London this summer.

The 30-year-old joined Barcelona from Arsenal in 2014, but his time at the Nou Camp has been riddled with injuries, allowing him to make just 21 appearances for the club over the last two seasons.
