Roma are rapidly closing in on securing the signing of Barcelona defender Thomas Vermaelen, who has also been linked with West Ham.

Barcelona are willing to move the former Arsenal centre-back on this summer and Roma have put themselves front and centre in the chase to scoop him up.

According to Sky Italia, Vermaelen is due to arrive in Rome tomorrow at 13:30 and will then be put through his medical paces as the Giallorossi look to seal the deal.

Roma have reached an agreement with Barcelona and are now looking to put the finishing touches to the move.

Vermaelen is expected to join the Serie A side on a loan deal with a purchase option included.

At Roma, he will be reunited with Wojciech Szczesny, with whom he played at Arsenal; the goalkeeper is just starting his second season-long loan at Roma from the Gunners.

Vermaelen will boost Roma coach Luciano Spalletti's defensive options, which were stretched earlier this summer following an injury picked up by Germany international defender Antonio Rudiger.
