Kevin De Bruyne has revealed that Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp is a firm fan of his abilities and wanted him to replace Mario Gotze at Borussia Dortmund in 2013.

Klopp was looking to replace Gotze after losing the German midfielder to Bayern Munich in 2013 and De Bruyne claims that he was the tactician's top target.

De Bruyne had just signed off on a season on loan in the Bundesliga with Werder Bremen and returned to Chelsea in the summer of 2013.

The Blues ended up deciding to keep the Belgian at the club, but with few first team chances he joined Wolfsburg permanently in January 2014.

But if Klopp had got his way then De Bruyne would have been playing his football with Borussia Dortmund.

He told German magazine Sport Bild: "Klopp wanted me to replace Gotze in 2013.

"He called me and said, 'You are my number one'", De Bruyne added.

Klopp will have to look at ways to keep De Bruyne quiet this season when his Liverpool side meet Manchester City in the Premier League.

De Bruyne moved to the Citizens last summer, while Klopp took over at Liverpool in October last year.
