Leeds United and Sunderland agreed a fee for Liam Bridcutt last week, it has been claimed, but wages remain the sticking point.

Bridcutt spent the majority of last season at Elland Road on loan, impressing and forcing his way back into the senior Scotland squad as a result.

Leeds want Bridcutt back on a permanent basis and Sunderland are willing to allow him to leave for the right price, with the Black Cats keen not to shoulder the final year of the midfielder's lucrative contract at the Stadium of Light.

And according to the Yorkshire Evening Post, Leeds and Sunderland did agree on a fee for the player last week.

But the move has been held up due to no resolution on how the final year of Bridcutt's contract will be paid.

The midfielder would have to take a substantial drop in wages if he moved to Elland Road, losing out on a year of money at Sunderland.

The Black Cats remain keen to offload Bridcutt though and could even send him out on loan if no agreement can be reached.

Bridcutt has missed all Leeds' pre-season preparations and their first league game of the season.
