Rangers manager Mark Warburton has made it clear that Newcastle United striker Adam Armstrong won’t be joining his side this summer, but he did hint at an imminent arrival of a new signing soon.

Warburton’s men got over their disappointing draw against Hamilton on Saturday with a 5-0 thrashing of Peterhead last night at Ibrox, in the second round of the Scottish League Cup.

Rangers have signed nine new players this summer, and there has been speculation recently that Warburton is keen to make the Newcastle United teenager his tenth signing.

The young forward caught the eye with his performances on loan at Coventry City with 20 goals for the League One outfit, but the Rangers boss made it clear the Newcastle man won’t be arriving at Ibrox this summer.

On the speculation linking Armstrong to Rangers, Warburton was quoted as saying by the Herald Scotland: “Not for us. He's a very talented player, but he's not coming to Rangers.

“If we took everyone in that we are linked to we would have a squad of 75 players.

"He's a very talented player, I know how well he did at Coventry, but there's no truth in that rumour.”

However, the Rangers boss indicated that the club could be closing in on another new signing, but refused to divulge any further details.

"Are we close to bringing someone? Maybe, fingers crossed, we'll see.

"Work is going on so hopefully we will make some progress.

“But you saw tonight the strength and depth of the squad, we made six changes and we looked good.”
