Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has insisted that he is ready to bring in new players, but is only prepared to spend money wisely.

With another lacklustre transfer market, and a defeat at home in the opening game of Arsenal’s season, Wenger is under the scanner again over his dealings this summer.

Granit Xhaka is the only major addition to Arsenal’s squad in the current window, but other than that, the Frenchman is showing indecisiveness in the market, with speculation suggesting that he is dithering over the price of Valencia defender Shkodran Mustafi.

The Arsenal manager stressed that he is not against the idea of spending money for new players, but insisted that he wants to use the club’s funds a little more wisely and judiciously.

The Arsenal boss said in a press conference: “We are working hard [behind the scenes]; you are convinced that I am not ready to buy players.

“We are ready to spend the money we have, but not the money we don’t have.

"It’s not my money.

“Buying calms down the fans, but we have to make sure the money is spent on the right players.”

Following Jamie Vardy’s rejection earlier in the summer, Arsenal have been scrambling for a striker, but are yet to identify a definitive target with little less than two weeks left in the window.
