Leeds United head coach Garry Monk is confident that new signing Pontus Jansson will add more quality to the defence, and will also allow the team to play their brand of football.

The Swedish central defender joined on a season-long loan deal from Torino earlier this week, with Leeds securing an option to make the move permanent later.

The 25-year-old, who has eight caps to his name for Sweden, struggled to play regular football at Torino during his two-year stay, but was a lynchpin for Malmo before he moved to Italy.

Leeds assistant Pep Clotet worked with Jansson at Malmo, and Monk is confident that the defender will add much needed experience to his backline, without compromising on the quality of play, because of his ability on the ball.

On the Swede, the 37-year-old told LUTV: “Pontus brings great experience, he is physically very good as well.

“He can play the football that we need to play as well, and will be a valuable member of the squad.”

Leeds also signed defender Luke Ayling last week, and the Whites boss believes his two recent defensive additions will add depth to his resources at the back.

“It was important that we strengthened our defence, and bringing in Luke Ayling and Pontus gives us more strength, experience and quality.”
