Former Manchester United and West Ham midfielder Ravel Morrison is not close to signing for Aston Villa, despite being omitted from Lazio's matchday squad.

Lazio coach Simone Inzaghi has not called Morrison into his squad for this evening's Serie A clash away at Atalanta and it instantly sparked speculation he was on the verge of leaving for Villa Park.

But according to Sky Italia, Morrison is not close to signing for Aston Villa, with the midfielder disappointed to be left out of the group by Inzaghi.

It is suggested only Inzaghi knows why Morrison was left out as the player is fit and on Thursday played 45 minutes of a pre-season game.

Morrison could yet return to England this summer, but no deal appears to be advanced.

Lazio's fans had been expecting Morrison to be involved, however the Englishman may have further work to do to convince Inzaghi he deserves his chance on the pitch.

Morrison, still just 23, joined Lazio last year after terminating his deal at West Ham.

A product of Manchester United's youth academy, he has had loan spells with Birmingham City, QPR and Cardiff City.
