Former Leeds United and Sunderland left-back Ian Harte has been left shocked by Donald Love's performance for Sunderland against Middlesbrough and says he cannot believe the defender ever played for Manchester United.

New Sunderland boss David Moyes, who worked with Love during his time at Manchester United, recently swooped to take the defender to the Stadium of Light.

Love was handed a start at right-back in the Premier League game and even before the end of the match Harte had seen enough to deem the defender not as good as some players in League Two.

Harte wrote on Twitter: "At Sunderland game, very disappointed in the right-back D Love. I have seen better in League Two., How has he ever played for Man United?"

Love, 21, is a product of Manchester United's youth academy, having first joined the Red Devils at the tender age of seven.

Love put pen to paper on a four-year contract with Sunderland.

The Black Cats ended up losing 2-1 to Middlesbrough, despite mounting a late push to claim a draw.
