Aston Villa chairman Dr Tony Xia has suggested his side are not in for Wolfsburg striker Bas Dost, a player they were claimed to be battling Newcastle United for.

Xia has signalled he is chasing a top class striker to add to the ranks at Villa Park as Roberto Di Matteo's men look to challenge for promotion from the Championship.

And the man being eyed appears not to be Dost, who has been linked with a switch to England.

Xia replied to a Tweet suggesting that Newcastle are set to beat Villa to Dost by insisting his side need a quick striker, not a tall target man.

The Villa owner wrote: "We need pace not height. Is he a national team player?"

Dost has been tipped to leave Wolfsburg this summer and Newcastle would now appear to be his most likely destination.

The Magpies are keen on the Dutchman as they too try to bounce instantly back up to the Premier League after relegation last season.

Both Aston Villa and Newcastle are expected to fight for promotion in the Championship.
