Graeme Murty has revealed that he always wanted to go to a “big club” after he started his new role as Rangers head development squad coach yesterday.

The 41-year-old, who succeeded Ian Durrant as the head coach of the developmental squad in the summer, has previously worked at Southampton and Norwich City.

Murty started his coaching career at Southampton’s academy before taking charge of Norwich City’s Under-18 squad.

And the former defender explained that Norwich boss Alex Neil prompted him to take the job at Rangers once the offer came.

Murty is now fully focused on becoming accustomed to the Rangers way as he begins his first coaching stint north of the border.

“Rather than be an aspirational team who are always punching above their weight I wanted to go to a big club”, he told Rangers TV.

“Talking to Alex Neil at Norwich he said, ‘When the Old Firm come in for you they don’t come twice. You have to go and take it.’

“More than anything the people at Norwich said to me once they’d heard I’d been offered the job that I must go and take it.

“I have to go and immerse myself in the culture and really get used to what it means to be a part of Rangers Football club.”

Rangers, who will start their Development League campaign with a home fixture against St Mirren tonight, finished the 2015/16 campaign in 13th spot with just 37 points from 32 outings, a staggering 51 points adrift of champions and arch-rivals Celtic.
