Real Madrid have indicated that Chelsea linked winger James Rodriguez will remain a bit part player if he continues at the club beyond the summer.

The Colombian’s future at Real Madrid has been in the doldrums all summer, despite the player himself insisting that he wants to continue playing at the Bernabeu next season.

Rodriguez wants to fight for a place in the squad, and even the Real Madrid hierarchy want him to stay, but coach Zinedine Zidane has different plans for the season.

Despite the absence of Cristiano Ronaldo and Karim Benzema from the squad, Rodriguez still didn’t start against Real Sociedad at the weekend, and played only 13 minutes in the second half.

According to Spanish daily AS, Zidane has indicated to the player that he will remain a bit part player in his squad, if he wants to continue playing for Real Madrid beyond the summer window.

With little more than a week left in the transfer window, the Colombian has been given the opportunity to decide whether he wants to accept the curtailed role at Real Madrid or opt for a fresh challenge.

Chelsea are reportedly interested in the 25-year-old, and are willing to offer a fee of around €70m for the player in the final stretch of the window to take him to England.

It remains to be seen whether the Colombian wants to keep fighting for a place in Zidane’s team or opt for a move to England and provide a fresh start to his career.
