Newcastle United are trying to do a deal for Palermo full-back Achraf Lazaar, who has also been linked with West Ham United, but they have not yet met the Italian side's asking price.

The Magpies are looking to get deals over the line in the final stretch of the transfer window and have zeroed in on Palermo's highly rated defender Lazaar.

According to Italian outlet Tutto Mercato, Newcastle have put €3.5m on the plate for Lazaar, but Palermo are sticking to their stance of not accepting less than €5m.

Further meetings are behind held today between the player's representatives and Palermo.

Watford were linked with Lazaar last summer, while earlier this month West Ham were claimed to have been in talks with Palermo over the defender.

Marseille have also shown interest in the Morocco international, though the trail to the Stade Velodrome has gone cold and now Newcastle are firmly in pole position.

Lazaar primarily operates as a left-back, however he has also been deployed as a left winger at points, and Magpies boss Rafael Benitez will be keen for the 24-year-old to make his attacking presence felt in the Championship.
