Asamoah Gyan is closing on a return to Sunderland, five years after leaving the club for the Middle East, according to Ghana Web.

The Ghana international currently turns out for Chinese Super League outfit Shanghai SIPG, where he is on a lucrative contract.

But it has not worked out for the striker in China and he is now tipped to rejoin Sunderland, iniitially on a loan deal.

Gyan is claimed to be set to head to England by the end of this week to push the deal over the line, strengthening David Moyes' attacking options at the Stadium of Light.

He had been linked with joining Championship side Fulham, but any move to Craven Cottage now appears to be off the table.

Gyan scored ten goals in 31 league games in a successful first season with Sunderland.

However, he soon opted to leave the Black Cats and joined United Arab Emirates side Al Ain on loan.

The 30-year-old hitman headed to China and Shanghai SIPG last year.

Gyan was prolific in the Middle East, while he has also found the back of the net in China.

However, a return to the Premier League will mean a step up to an intensely more competitive level.
