A potential Sheffield United move for Leeds United midfielder Luke Murphy has been played down, despite the fact that the former Crewe man was on the Blades' wanted list earlier this summer.

The 26-year-old midfielder played an important role for Leeds last season, and made 38 appearances in all competitions for the club, but has found himself on the fringes of the squad this term.

Other than a run-out against Luton Town in the League Cup, Murphy has not been used much by new head coach Garry Monk, and the midfielder has not even featured in matchday squads for league games.

An influx of new signings this summer means the midfielder could continue to be on the fringes of the first team, and there have been suggestions that he could leave before Wednesday’s deadline day.

Sheffield United have been keeping a close watch on the midfielder all summer, and he features on the shortlist of targets for the Blades.

However, according to the BBC, the League One club are yet to make any concrete move for Murphy, which would suggest that the midfielder might not end up at Bramall Lane.

It remains to be seen whether Monk includes Murphy in his squad for Leeds' trip to Nottingham Forest.

He has a contract until 2019 with Leeds.
