Newcastle United have not made a bid for Everton midfielder James McCarthy, it has been claimed.

Rafael Benitez's side, who have just scooped up Daryl Murphy from Ipswich Town, have been strongly linked with bidding to take McCarthy away from Goodison Park before the transfer window slams shut.

But according to the Chronicle, the Magpies have not put a bid in for McCarthy.

It remains to be seen whether Newcastle will make an offer for the 25-year-old before the window closes, with extra pressure on Championship clubs to finalise their squads due to the ending of the emergency loan window.

Everton snapped McCarthy up from Wigan Athletic in 2013, paying around £13m to take him to Merseyside.
