Newcastle United midfielder Cheick Tiote's move to Galatasaray did not fall apart on medical grounds, it has been claimed.

The Ivorian flew to Istanbul to complete his switch from St. James' Park to the Turk Telekom Arena and was expected to quickly pass a medical and put pen to paper with the Turkish giants.

But the deal collapsed today, with reports emerging suggesting that medical reasons were behind it falling apart.

But according to the Shields Gazette, such talk is wide of the mark and Tiote did not fail a medical.

Indeed, it is claimed that the switch collapsed due to contractual and financial issues.

Tiote has been linked with a number of clubs this summer and several sides are likely to have been watching proceedings closely.

However, with such little time before the closure of the transfer window on Wednesday night, clubs will have to move quickly to get a deal over the line for the midfielder.
