Liverpool winger Lazar Markovic is not being targeted by Newcastle United, despite claims the Magpies want the Serbian.

Markovic spent last term away from Anfield on loan at Turkish side Fenerbahce and although he was with the Reds over pre-season, he has struggled to break into Jurgen Klopp's first team thinking.

As such, Liverpool are looking to send Markovic out on another loan stint, with a move within England the preferred option.

Rafael Benitez's Newcastle have been reported to be chasing the former Benfica man, but according to the Shields Gazette, Markovic is not a target for the Magpies.

Newcastle may look to make further additions before the transfer window slams shut on Wednesday night, but Markovic appears unlikely to be heading to St. James' Park.
