A loan move to Celtic for Everton midfielder James McCarthy, who has also been linked with Crystal Palace, is a non-starter, according to BBC Scotland.

McCarthy has been linked with a switch away from Everton for much of the summer, but it remains unclear whether the Toffees are willing to allow him to depart.

The midfielder has been mooted as a loan target for Brendan Rodgers' Celtic, but a switch to Celtic Park is off the agenda.

Palace may yet move to try to get a deal for McCarthy done, but that may be dependent on whether they can land Jack Wilshere.

Alan Pardew's men want to take Wilshere from Arsenal on a season-long loan deal, but are battling with Roma and Bournemouth for his signature.

McCarthy has featured on a regular basis for the Toffees, but it remains to be seen whether he is still at Goodison Park by the time the transfer window closes.
