Tim Krul has revealed that Moussa Sissoko thought he would end up playing his football in Italy, rather than moving to Tottenham Hotspur on transfer deadline day.

Sissoko had been desperate to leave Newcastle United for much of the summer following the Magpies' relegation from the Premier League.

A number of clubs were interested in the midfielder, who was the subject of a tug-of-war between Everton and Spurs on deadline day, and ultimately joined the north London club for £30m.

But with Inter and Juventus both keen, Krul says Sissoko told him he felt he would be going to Italy.

"He thought himself that he would go to Italy, that is what he told me only last week", Krul told Ajax TV.

"And now he is in London", the goalkeeper added.

Spurs had been unwilling to meet Newcastle's £30m asking price for Sissoko, but with Everton hitting the Magpies' figure, Mauricio Pochettino's men were forced to match it or risk losing the Frenchman to Ronald Koeman's side.

Krul meanwhile has joined Dutch giants Ajax on a season-long loan deal from Newcastle.

Despite being Dutch and having won eight caps for his country, Krul has never played senior football in the Netherlands, having started his professional career with Newcastle.
