Bordeaux goalkeeper Cedric Carrasso has lifted the lid on knocking back a last-minute proposal from Sunderland on transfer deadline day.

The Black Cats were chasing another goalkeeper and scrambling to get a deal across the line before the window slammed shut.

Their search took them to France and Bordeaux, where 34-year-old Carrasso was the man zeroed in on by the Stadium of Light outfit.

But the shot-stopper, who joined Bordeaux from Toulouse in 2009 and has just returned from injury, knocked back the chance to go to the Premier League.

"Yes, at the last second [I had an offer from Sunderland", he said on Canal+'s Telefoot programme.

"But it was not the time [to move].

"I was coming back from injury and there are other things to do."

The Frenchman started his career in the youth ranks at Marseille and had a brief loan spell at Crystal Palace in the 2001/02 campaign.

Carrasso has made nearly 300 appearances for Bordeaux since joining the club and has also been capped once by France.

His deal with Bordeaux is due to run until the end of the season.
