Paris Saint-Germain defender Marquinhos feels David Luiz’s errors often get exaggerated and has insisted that his compatriot is an exemplary defender.

Marquinhos played alongside his compatriot at PSG before Luiz made the shock decision to return to Chelsea on transfer deadline day last month.

The 29-year-old is known for some of his erratic defending and has often been criticised for his displays for both club and country, but Marquinhos stressed that Luiz is a brilliant football, from whom he learned a lot.

He admits that the role of a defender in a team is often defined by their failures, but believes that Luiz sometimes get unwarranted criticism as some of his errors are often blown into something which they are not.

Marquinhos told ESPN Brasil: “David Luiz as a person and as player is exemplary.

“I had the pleasure of working and learning from him, and I tried to learn the maximum I could.

“The life of a player in his position is risky, as the central defender is the last man, he cannot make mistakes; the defender is usually a zero or a hero for his team.

“David was exemplary, and some of the criticism was exaggerated because he brought a lot to the club.”

Luiz made his 'second' debut for Chelsea on Friday night in their 2-1 loss to Liverpool at Stamford Bridge, and though John Terry is on the way back from injury, the Brazilian will hope to keep his place in the team.
