Ex-Red Mark Wright believes midfielder Jordan Henderson is growing in stature as Liverpool captain this season.

The England international was handed the Liverpool captaincy last season by former manager Brendan Rodgers, and Jurgen Klopp also put the faith in Henderson when he took charge of the club in October last year.

However, the 26-year-old’s performances have been up and down, and he has attracted criticism for some of his displays for club and country in recent months.

But Henderson has been slowly regaining some form this season, and a sumptuous long range strike against Chelsea last week further provided evidence that the midfielder could be coming into his own at Liverpool.

Wright admits Henderson might not be as naturally talented as some of his Liverpool colleagues, but his commitment is unquestionable and he believes the midfielder is slowly growing in confidence and stature as club captain at Anfield.

The former Liverpool defender said on LFC TV: “You are not saying he is as talented as someone like [Sadio] Mane, who is making things happen.

“But what he does do, he gives everything in his locker and his delivery is getting better.

"Obviously, he needs to be scoring more goals from the midfield area, but as a person I seem him growing in stature.

“I was a bit hesitant making him captain, but I think he is growing in stature and taking it all in his stride, looking better every time he plays.”

Henderson joined Liverpool from Sunderland in 2011, and has made 218 appearances for the Merseyside giants.
