Former Liverpool defender Mark Wright is confident that the Reds are looking to go one better in the EFL Cup this season by winning the competition.

The Merseyside giants came mightily close to winning the tournament last season, but suffered a heart breaking penalty shootout defeat to Manchester City in the final.

With Liverpool opening their EFL Cup campaign with a trip to Derby County tonight, many feel the competition is a great opportunity for Jurgen Klopp to win his first trophy at Anfield.

Former Liverpool defender Wright believes that the Reds could fancy their chances of again going to Wembley this season in the EFL Cup, and take the next step by winning the competition.

On whether Liverpool should prioritise the EFL Cup, the former defender told LFC TV: “I think so.

“I think Jurgen Klopp prioritises everything, he wants to win every single game. I don’t think there is a game or competition he doesn’t want to compete in.

“And I think the competition for places in the Liverpool team now is immense, and this is a tournament where they would think they can do one better than last season.”

Liverpool also lost the Europa League final last season, but with the Reds starting the current term positively, their fans are expecting to end the campaign with a trophy to celebrate.
