Former Liverpool star David Fairclough feels Divock Origi provides the Reds with a different option in attack.

The Belgium international scored Liverpool’s third in their 3-0 win over Derby County in the EFL Cup on Tuesday night, with Ragnar Klavan and Philippe Coutinho being the other two goalscorers.

Origi, who scored three goals in four EFL Cup matches last season, also found the back of the net in Liverpool’s 5-0 win over Burton Albion in the previous round of the domestic cup competition in late August.

The 21-year-old has thus far scored 12 goals in 39 appearances in all competitions for the Merseyside giants, in addition to providing three assists.

And Fairclough, who thinks Origi’s style of play suits Liverpool, however, was quick to add that the youngster still has scope for improvement.

“He clearly likes this competition”, Fairclough told LFC TV.

“He has got a good record in the League Cup and this competition is a good opportunity for the forwards to get a goal or two and give yourself a little bit of a boost.

“There were one or two moments where Jurgen [Klopp] was a little bit disappointed that he wasn’t making himself available to be the outlet.

“He had a lot of responsibilities, but for most parts, he does well in that sense.

“He is that sort of option that, and he’s strong, he holds it in, he wins good possession for Liverpool.

“His pass selection at times can be a bit better.”

Origi was signed by Liverpool from Lille in 2014, but the forward headed back to the French club for the season on loan as part of the deal before returning to Anfield at the start of the 2015/16 campaign.
