Mark Warburton has warned Rangers against resting on their laurels, following his side’s thumping 5-0 win over Queen of the South in a Scottish League Cup quarter-final clash on Tuesday night.

The Gers, who headed into the fixture on the back of a three-game winless run in the Scottish Premiership, broke the deadlock in the 33rd minute through Jason Holt.

Andy Halliday then doubled Rangers’ advantage at Ibrox after the break before Martyn Waghorn’s hat-trick helped the hosts to return to winning ways in style.

And Warburton, who admitted that is only normal for his charges to get excited about the semi-final at Hampden, however, urged Rangers not to take their foot off the pedal, with the season still being relatively young.

“We have to take one game at a time”, he told Rangers TV.

“You always look forward to a game at Hampden, always look forward to a semi-final.

“The players will want to win and at the end of their career want to look back at the trophies and the medals.

“But, most pleasing tonight was that we were more clinical in front of goal, we missed a lot of chances as well.

“So pleased with that, but we will work hard and keep working hard and there’s a long season ahead.”

Rangers, who played out a goalless draw with Ross County at the weekend, are currently fifth in the Scottish Premiership table with nine points from six games, four adrift of leaders Celtic.
