Former Portsmouth striker Steve Claridge feels it could be impossible for Manchester United to win the league this season as Jose Mourinho is still struggling to settle on the right combinations.

Manchester United went into last night’s EFL Cup game against Northampton Town on three-game losing streak, and needed a comfortable to win to stem the rot for a while.

While the Cobblers did pose some threats, and the scores were level at half-time, the Red Devils finished the game with a reasonably comfortable 3-1 win over the League One outfit.

However, Claridge is not convinced about Mourinho’s men and while he admits that at the start of the campaign he felt Manchester United could win the league, his thoughts on them have changed over the last week or so.

The former striker feels Mourinho is still struggling to identify his best team and combinations, which he believes could be their undoing this season.

Claridge, analysing the match after the final whistle, said on BBC Radio 5 live: “Early doors, they looked a very good side.

“We were talking about could win the league, and we were taking punts on them, and when I watched them I thought they could win the league.

“But I watched them tonight and thought that would be impossible.

"I know there were some players missing, but there have been so many changes happening, and so many things going on.

“It’s almost like they have too many good players and he doesn’t know how to set them up.”

Mourinho and his men will be desperate to get back to winning ways when they host champions Leicester City at Old Trafford this Saturday.
