New West Ham United signing Alvaro Arbeloa has explained that he was delighted with his Hammers debut in the 1-0 win over Accrington Stanley in an EFL Cup game on Wednesday night.

The Spaniard joined West Ham on a one-year deal in the summer, following the expiration of his contract with Real Madrid.

Arbeloa did not feature in West Ham’s last two Premier League outings, with Slaven Bilic’s team losing both the matches by 4-2 scorelines against Watford and West Bromwich Albion respectively.

But the 33-year-old played the full 90 minutes in the EFL Cup match at the Olympic Stadium, where Dimitri Payet’s injury time strike proved to be the difference between the teams.

And Arbeloa, who helped his club to keep a clean sheet against the League Two outfit, was pleased with his debut for the east London club.

It is Arbeloa’s second spell in England, having previously turned out for Liverpool between 2007 and 2009.
