Jurgen Klopp has expressed suprise at how much Liverpool earned from the sale of Raheem Sterling to Manchester City.

Liverpool, despite looking to establish themselves in the top four and challenge for the title in the Premier League, have earned more money through player sales over the last six years than any other club in Europe.

The Reds, who were taken over by American investors Fenway Sports Group in 2010, earned £50m from selling Fernando Torres to Chelsea in 2011, while Luis Suarez was sold to Barcelona in 2014, the Catalans reporting the fee as £65m. And Sterling left for Manchester City in the summer of 2015 for £49m.

Klopp picked out the Suarez sale, which was suggested to him as coming in at £75m, as a major driver of income, but he thought Sterling's sale had brought in even more.

Asked about a press conference about Liverpool earning bundles of cash over the last six years, Klopp replied: "Suarez was involved, Sterling, what was the number for Suarez?"

He was told £75m for Suarez and said: "Aaah. Sterling, £80m? Yes?"

Told the figure was actually £49m, Klopp looked surprised and replied: "Only! OK."

Klopp also explained he feels that Liverpool do not need to be a selling club, with no pressure put on him to sell players.

"Liverpool have no need to be a selling club.

"Nobody calls us and says sell, we need money."

Klopp's men booked an EFL Cup tie against Tottenham Hotspur earlier this week by seeing off Championship side Derby County in the third round of the competition.

Sterling's Manchester City meanwhile have been drawn to face Manchester United.
