Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho has indicated that it is wrong to blame his captain Wayne Rooney for his side’s current poor form.

Rooney has been receiving criticism for his lackadaisical performances since the start of the season, but Manchester United’s recent three-game losing streak increased the questions about his place in the starting eleven.

The Manchester United captain was again poor at Northampton Town on Wednesday night, and while Mourinho’s men won, Rooney again didn’t escape criticism.

Mourinho feels that it is wrong to pin the blame for his side’s poor form on Rooney, and insisted that the whole Manchester United squad share the responsibility for poor performances in recent games.

He said in a press conference: “Wayne Rooney’s form is like Man United's form.

“We are a team.

"We are not Wayne Rooney and we all started well, we all won four matches and we all lost three matches in the week, so that’s not Wayne Rooney and to be honest he didn’t play against Feyenoord, so he was not directly involved in that match.

“Everybody is involved in every match, even the ones who are not playing.”

With Rooney completing the full 90 minutes at the Sixfields Stadium, it remains to be seen whether the England captain finds a place in Mourinho’s starting eleven on Saturday against Leicester City at Old Trafford.

With 246 goals to his name at Manchester United, the 30-year-old is rapidly closing in on Sir Bobby Charlton’s club record haul of 249 strikes.
