Tottenham Hotspur boss Mauricio Pochettino has admitted that he is pleased to see the increased level of competition for places in the starting line-up, ahead of his side’s Premier League meeting with Middlesbrough.

Spurs, who fielded a youthful and second-string side against Gillingham on Wednesday night, still managed to win the EFL Cup game 5-0.

Four players, namely, Georges-Kevin N'Koudou, Cameron Carter-Vickers, Marcus Edwards and Anton Walkes made their senior Tottenham debut in that game, while Harry Winks started for the first time.

On top of that, Vincent Janssen and Josh Onomah both scored their first goals for the club against Gillingham.

And Pochettino, who insisted that is vitally important for his charges to be ready to play in any game, is satisfied to see the fight for a place in the starting eleven heating up.

“[It’s important that] everybody is ready to compete and take their place in the starting eleven in every game in every competition.

“It’s good for us because it increases our level.”
