Tottenham Hotspur manager Mauricio Pochettino was delighted with his men's 2-1 win at Middlesbrough, but wants his side to be more clinical to finish off games.

Spurs started the game on the front foot, and created chances from the off to put Middlesbrough under pressure at the Riverside Stadium. And the early pressure paid off when Heung-Min Son played a one-two with Vincent Janssen and fired in a low shot past Victor Valdes to give the lead to the away side.

Spurs continued to put pressure on Boro, and Son continued to create havoc in the home side’s defence. He scored his second and doubled Tottenham’s lead in the 23rd minute when he bentr a shot past Valdes’ far corner. The Spaniard made a couple of crucial saves in the rest of the first half to keep Middlesbrough in the game.

Janssen almost scored Tottenham’s third just after the break, but Ben Gibson just nicked the ball off him to keep Boro in play, and save the home side’s blushes.

And the defender met Stewart Downing’s free kick in the 65th minute to pull one goal back and get Middlesbrough back into the game.

Son almost scored a hat-trick, but Calum Chambers blocked his fierce strike in the 77th minute to keep the South Korean and Spurs at bay.

Jordan Rhodes almost equalised from another top Downing delivery from a free-kick, but his header was straight at Hugo Lloris, who gobbled up the ball and protected Tottenham’s lead.

And despite dominating the ball towards the end of the game, Middlesbrough failed to create enough chances, and Tottenham closed out the game to take all three points from the Riverside Stadium.

Pochettino was happy with the three points and the performance of Son, who scored the two goals, but he stressed the importance of side learning the art of being clinical in front of goal.

He told Spurs TV: "We fully deserved the result; the most important thing is the victory. Son was fantastic but it was a collective effort.

"The first half was great and we should have scored more than two.

“We need to learn to be more aggressive and clinical."
