Alex McLeish thinks Joey Barton can still offer Rangers a lot this season and feels the Gers may not be playing the right system for the tigerish midfielder.

Rangers appeared to have landed a coup when they persuaded Barton to snub the chance to play in the Premier League to move north on a two-year deal at Ibrox in the summer.

However, his early season displays were below par and Barton is currently serving a three-week suspension following a training ground bust-up with team-mate Andy Halliday.

There is now doubt over whether Barton has a future at Rangers, but McLeish feels that the former QPR midfielder does still have something to bring to the table.

And the former Rangers boss does not feel the system employed by Mark Warburton plays to Barton's strengths, with that being something the club need to work on.

"I saw a lot of him last year at Burnley and he played well", McLeish said on Sky Sports 1, ahead of Rangers' game against Aberdeen.

"I really still think he can give Rangers some extra added experience this season.

"It's not worked for him on the pitch as yet, but maybe the system has not quite suited him at the moment and they have to work on that as well", he added.

Barton was out of contract with Burnley, who he helped win the English Championship title and with it promotion to the Premier League, this summer.

And despite being offered a new deal by the Clarets, he opted to head to the Scottish Premiership to ply his trade with Rangers.
