Former Rangers boss Alex McLeish does not believe that the Gers will offload Joey Barton, having made a substantial investment in the midfielder.

Gers boss Mark Warburton tempted Barton to snub the chance to pay in the English Premier League last term to head up to the Scottish top flight on a two-year deal.

But he has struggled to make his mark on the pitch, while off it he was involved in a training ground bust-up with team-mate Andy Halliday which ultimately led to a three-week suspension.

It has been claimed in some quarters that Barton's Rangers career is all but over, however McLeish does not see it like that. The ex-Rangers boss admits though that why exactly Barton has been banned for three weeks remains a mystery.

He said on Sky Sports 1 ahead of Rangers' clash against Aberdeen: "It's strange that we don't really know what the three-week ban is for.

"I'm sure he [Warburton] would be wanting Joey out on the pitch showing what he can really do.

"Mark Warburton is right to protect Rangers, he has to do that first and foremost.

"He's disciplined the player, so it doesn't look as if Joey's going to leave Rangers", McLeish continued.

"It's a three-week ban. They've got a big investment in him and so I don't think they are going to throw that down the toilet.

"I'm not sure what the wages are, but it won't be a small package for a player like Joey Barton, coming from England", he added.

In total Barton has made eight appearances for Rangers since joining the club, picking up only one booking along the way.
