Celtic legend Chris Sutton has praised Aberdeen attacking midfielder James Maddison’s free-kick goal against Rangers on Sunday, saying as a neutral he can only salute its brilliance.

With the game level at 1-1 in the 90th minute, Maddison hit a ferocious free-kick which eluded Gers goalkeeper Wes Foderingham’s outstretched arms and flew into the back of the net after hitting the upright.

The 19-year-old’s winner at Pittodrie sent Aberdeen up to second place, while Rangers dropped down to the bottom half of the Premiership table.

And Sutton, who lauded Maddison’s technique, insisted that the starlet deserves all the praise in the world.

“It was terrific technique”, he wrote on Twitter, when asked how much he enjoyed the free-kick.

“I think as a neutral you have to take your hat off to brilliance, well done James Maddison.”

Maddison, who joined Aberdeen on loan from Norwich City in the summer, has already scored twice in four appearances for the Scottish Premiership outfit.

Although Sutton feels it is early days to comment on whether Maddison is good enough to play for Celtic, the former striker was quick to add that the Norwich loanee is definitely one for the future.

“Have to say it's early days but what a free kick and what an impact he's made at Aberdeen, keep an eye out for him”, he tweeted, when asked if Maddison is capable of playing for Celtic.

Maddison, whose present contract with Aberdeen runs until 2019, is a product of Coventry City’s youth system.
