Former Rangers boss Graeme Souness feels manager Mark Warburton will think of the club first while dealing with Joey Barton.

Barton, who joined Rangers from Burnley on a free transfer in the summer, was suspended by the Gers for three weeks after he was involved in a training ground bust-up with team-mate Andy Halliday earlier in the month.

Warburton initially told Barton to stay away from the club, with the 34-year-old soon issuing a statement and also going on to radio station Talksport, to talk about the situation.

Rangers then issued a formal suspension statement on Monday after leaving out the midfielder from their matchday squad against Ross County on 17th September, a match which ended goalless.

And Souness, who thinks Barton will regret his actions, however, explained that Warburton will be first and foremost thinking about Rangers while dealing with the situation.

“He has found himself where he is now and I can’t comment on that as I wasn’t there when it happened”, Souness was quoted as saying by the Herald Scotland.

“Joey will deeply regret it.

"But he’s obviously got himself on the wrong side of the manager.

“Mark Warburton will deal with it in the way he sees fit and proper for, firstly, the benefit of Rangers football club and secondly, for his career at Rangers.”

Barton, whose present contract with Rangers runs until 2018, has thus far made eight appearances in all competitions for the club.
