Former Leeds striker Noel Whelan believes Pablo Hernandez is gradually getting used to playing in the Championship, and is finally showing the flashes of the quality he possesses.

The 31-year-old Spaniard joined Leeds on a loan deal in the summer, and has become a key figure in Garry Monk’s squad, despite a few indifferent performances at the start of the season.

However, with time the former Swansea playmaker has started to influence games, and was key in pulling the creative strings in Leeds’ win over Ipswich Town on Saturday.

Former Leeds forward Whelan feels Hernandez is finally getting the hang of playing in the Championship, and is getting used to his team-mates at Leeds, which has led to improved performances.

And he is confident that the Spaniard will start to influence games more with the undoubted quality he possesses in his locker.

In his column for the Yorkshire Evening Post, Whelan wrote: “With Hernandez, I think he is getting used to his team-mates and he is settling down now at the club.

“He’s getting used to Championship football because it’s not easy.

"It’s a different kind of football to Premiership football and playing abroad in Qatar where he has been.

"But now I think he is finding that confidence, he is getting match fit and he is getting used to playing with the players and that’s what it’s about now.

“He is getting used to the style that Garry wants, he’s settling down and we are seeing the quality that he brings the team.”

The 31-year-old has made nine appearances in all competitions this season for Leeds, and his solitary goal came in their win over Cardiff City earlier this month.

His loan deal expires in the new year, but Leeds could move to keep him on a permanent basis
