Celtic goalkeeper Craig Gordon believes that defender Jozo Simunovic’s return from injury is almost like a new signing for the club.

The Scottish champions signed the Croatian from Dinamo Zagreb last summer, but his first season at the club was marred by injuries as he struggled with serious knee trouble.

Simunovic missed pre-season training due to the knee injury, but finally returned to the team in a substitute appearance against Inverness earlier this month, and has started the last two games for Celtic.

Gordon admits that the defender’s quality was never in question for those who watched him briefly last season and during training sessions, and feels he is a great addition to the squad, almost like a new signing.

The goalkeeper told Celtic TV: “Everybody at the training ground knows how good he is.

“We got a glimpse of it before he got injured; last season he played in a few games, not as many as before his injury.

“We know when we got him back fit he would be a big addition to the squad. He is almost like a new signing, coming back after such a long time.

“It’s great to have him back involved, and he has done really well in the last three games.”

Simunovic was heavily linked with a move away from Celtic in the summer and almost joined Torino, but the Italian side could not agree a fee for his services.

He has a contract until 2020 with the Glasgow giants.
