Liverpool goalkeeper Simon Mignolet’s former coach Jos Beckx feels that there is no reason for Belgium to drop the custodian from their squad at the moment.

Mignolet lost his place in the Liverpool starting eleven last weekend when Loris Karius made his Premier League debut for the club, and the German is expected to hold on to his place in the coming weeks.

The Belgian’s place in the eleven was always under the scanner and only an injury to Karius in pre-season forced Jurgen Klopp to persist with Mignolet in goal at the start of the campaign.

With Mignolet benched at Liverpool, there are concerns that Belgium could opt for a new number two to Thibaut Courtois, but Beckx feels his former charge deserves more faith after playing at such a high level for a long period of time.

The 51-year-old told Voetbal Krant: “I do not see why the Red Devils would start having doubts about Simon.

“He has been performing at a high level for a very long time, and deserves the trust.”

Mignolet, who made his debut for Belgium in 2011, has largely been Courtois’ understudy in the national squad, and has earned 17 international caps.
