Former Liverpool star John Aldridge is impressed with Reds Under-23 striker Brooks Lennon’s style of play.

The 19-year-old, who has scored once in six Premier League 2 matches in the present campaign, found the back of the net in Liverpool’s 2-1 loss to Wolfsburg in their Premier League International Cup opener on Wednesday night.

After a goalless opening 45 minutes at Prenton Park, the German team took the lead early in the second half through Josip Brekalo.

Lennon, who was then brought on by manager Michael Beale as Liverpool searched for an equaliser, found the back of the net in the 73rd minute, but the American’s effort was ruled out for offside.

However, the forward did score the equaliser eight minutes later after latching on to Ben Woodburn’s through ball and calmly slotting it home underneath the Wolfsburg goalkeeper.

Liverpool’s joy was short-lived though, as Hendrik Hansen’s injury-time header handed Wolfsburg a win and in turn ended the Reds’ four-game winning streak.

And Aldridge, who turned out for Liverpool between 1987 and 1989, poured praise on Lennon, calling the youngster an ideal goal-poaching striker.

“He's a poacher. He's an out and out goalscorer”, he told LFC TV.

“His runs are excellent.

"He runs in behind, he holds the ball up and he gives you options.”

Brooks, who joined Liverpool’s academy from RSL Academy in the summer of 2015, was promoted to the Under-23 team from the Under-18s at the start of the season.
