Former Tottenham Hotspur star Jermaine Jenas feels Spurs have looked so solid this season because the rest of the squad are gaining the same maturity the defence already has.

Spurs, whose first choice back-four comprises of Kyle Walker, Jan Vertonghen, Toby Alderweireld and Danny Rose, is packed with experienced internationals along with goalkeeper Hugo Lloris.

Although the midfield and the forward line are comparatively less experienced, the majority of the players in the departments have been at White Hart Lane for at least a season, thereby being accustomed to Spurs' playing style.

And Jenas, who turned out for Tottenham between 2005 and 2013, barring loan spells at Aston Villa and Nottingham Forest, thinks the club have managed to up their maturity level by keeping the crux of the team intact.

“One of the reasons Spurs have been so solid recently is the experience [Mauricio] Pochettino has at the back”, Jenas wrote in his column on the BBC.

“Further forward, the regulars have all been younger players like [Harry] Kane, [Erik] Lamela and [Dele] Alli, who was playing his first top flight season last year, or [Heung-Min] Son, who was new to English football.

“Together, they are gaining the same sort of maturity that the defence already has.

“With that will come a better understanding of how clinical they have to be to put themselves in positions where they can control games – and win them.”

Tottenham, who are currently second in the Premier League with 14 points from six games, will next face leaders Manchester City in a top-of-the-table clash on Sunday.
