Mauricio Pochettino has eased the pressure on Tottenham Hotspur new boy Vincent Janssen, explaining he feels it will take some time for the Dutchman to fully adapt to the Premier League.

Janssen top scored in the Dutch Eredivisie last season, his first season in his country's top flight, with AZ Alkmaar – something which attracted Spurs' attention.

The north London club eventually thrashed out a fee with AZ Alkmaar for the Netherlands international and took him to White Hart Lane to provide competition for talisman Harry Kane.

With Kane currently out injured, Janssen is expected to step up, however the Dutchman has yet to hit the back of the net in the Premier League or Europe and missed a number of half chances against CSKA Moscow in the Champions League in midweek.

Pochettino knows that goals for strikers are important, but he is willing to cut Janssen some slack as he knows the hitman must still adapt to the step up in quality that the Premier League represents.

"We cannot compare it to when he was with his former club or when he was in Holland. The Premier League is very tough, it’s different to the Dutch league", the Spurs boss told a press conference.

"We are happy with the way that he’s working – it’s true that he needs to score because strikers [want to score] like Harry Kane, but he only needs to be patient.

"He’s working, he’s adapting his qualities at a new club in a new league and it’s always difficult, but we are very happy with the way that he’s working", Pochettino added.

So far Janssen has made nine appearances in all competitions for Tottenham, scoring once, in a 5-0 rout against League One side Gillingham in the EFL Cup.
